SNOO Levels Explained: Colors, App Screenshots and Settings

SNOO app showing blue Baseline
Blue is Baseline.

SNOO starts on blue Baseline and can move up through four more levels when it hears crying. As the baby settles, it gradually comes back down. Each level has a color in the app and on the bassinet's button.

ColorLevelWhat it means
BlueBaselineGentle starting sound and motion
PurpleLevel 1First increase above Baseline
GreenLevel 2Faster rocking and stronger sound
YellowLevel 3Another increase in rocking and sound
PinkLevel 4Highest rocking and sound level

With Motion Limiter on, the rocking stays at Level 2 even when the sound goes higher. Happiest Baby's level guide explains the sequence.

If crying continues, SNOO stops and its button turns red. Check on your baby. You can pick them up before it reaches that point.

What we actually used

We never used Level 3 or 4 motion with our baby. It looked pretty violent to us. Happiest Baby says the motion is designed to be safe when used as directed, but we were more comfortable leaving Motion Limiter on.

We did like the Level 3 and 4 white noise. That really helped soothe our baby back to sleep, and Motion Limiter let the sound go higher without the faster rocking.

We mostly used the app to lock a level or turn on the white noise remotely. Premium costs $19.99 a month if it isn't included with your SNOO.

The subscription screen lists quite a bit more: sleep logs and reports, adjustable starting level and responsiveness, Weaning Mode, Car Ride Mode, articles and expert advice, and control of multiple SNOOs. We didn't use most of it. For us, it mostly came down to Level Lock and remotely starting the white noise, which the app calls Sleepytime Sounds.

What the buttons do

Use the arrows to turn the level up or down. The middle button pauses SNOO, the speaker opens the sound controls, and the padlock locks the level.

The settings that change how SNOO responds

  • Motion Limiter caps movement at Level 2. Sound can still increase to Levels 3 and 4.
  • Level Lock keeps it on Baseline, Level 1 or Level 2. While locked, it won't change levels automatically. You can't lock Levels 3 or 4.
  • Motion Start Level lets you choose which level SNOO starts on. You'll find it in the app's Settings menu. Ours was set to Level 1. It can still go higher when the baby cries, unless you've locked the level.
  • Responsiveness adjusts how much fussing it takes to trigger an increase.

We couldn't turn Motion Limiter off without a subscription. Level Lock, Motion Start Level and Responsiveness also require Premium app access.

Why is the screen staying green?

The M in the upper-right corner means Motion Limiter is on. With that setting, the app stays green when the sound reaches Level 3 or 4 because the rocking is still at Level 2. The bassinet's button can change color. Happiest Baby explains this here.

If SNOO won't change levels at all, check whether you've locked it. If it keeps responding to grunts while your baby sleeps, try a lower Responsiveness setting.

Sleep logs and connection errors

What do the red marks in the sleep log mean?

Blue marks logged sleep sessions. Red marks time SNOO spent soothing, not a specific level or a shutoff. Here's how to read the log.

What does “SNOO can't connect” mean?

The app can't connect to the bassinet. Check that SNOO has power and that your phone can use the internet on the same Wi-Fi network. If those are working, follow Happiest Baby's troubleshooting steps.
