With a personalized gift, check the actual product and final design—not just whether the name is spelled correctly. A great illustration can still be cropped badly, printed on the wrong shirt size or ordered too late for the occasion.
This guide brings together the subjects of One Scrappy Mom's two older CafePress pages: personalized products, including a tote and T-shirt, and a later gift-card giveaway. Both giveaways are closed. The checklist below is newly written guidance, not a recreated claim about the former owner's purchases.
Choose the item before preparing the design
CafePress's current product directory includes categories such as T-shirts, tote bags and drinkware. Check the exact listing and customization options for the item you intend to order; options and minimum quantities need not be identical across products or storefronts.
Write down what the recipient will actually use the item for. A book tote needs appropriate dimensions; a keepsake mug needs readable artwork; a shirt needs the right fit. “They like this picture” is only half the decision.

Prepare one clean version of the artwork
Start with the original image file when you have it, rather than a screenshot of a screenshot. Check the uploader's requirements for the chosen product. Avoid treating a file-size recommendation for one item as a universal rule for all CafePress printing.
For a name or date, write the intended text separately and compare it character by character with the preview. Pay attention to apostrophes, accents and the order of month and day. A second person can often spot a typo after the designer has stopped seeing it.
Use artwork you own or have permission to reproduce. For a gift involving a child's photograph, consider whether a first name—or no name—would do the job without including a school, address or other unnecessary personal details.
Review the final order, not an earlier draft
Before checkout, verify the selected size, color, quantity and design together. If you changed the product after uploading the art, inspect the new preview again. Save the final proof and order confirmation so you can compare them with what arrives.
Check the displayed delivery estimate against the actual gift date. Production and shipping are separate considerations, and an old blog's turnaround time is not a promise for a new order. Allow yourself a backup plan when the gift is needed for a fixed event.
When something needs changing
Contact CafePress promptly with the order number and a clear description of the problem. Its customer-service page says self-service order management is available before processing has started. That is not a guarantee that a personalized order can be changed at any later stage.
If the delivered item differs from the approved design, photograph the issue alongside your saved proof and use the current order-help process. Follow the item's own washing or care label; do not assume all printed fabric or all mugs share one cleaning method.
