As the summer winds down and comes to an end and back to school is very much in the near future for us (some have already started), it’s time for me to prepare my daughter in case that moment of her first period arrives at school. While I would ideally LOVE to be around, this is not possible. I began the discussion with my daughter about the changes that would happen and also the changes that are coming. She was pretty receptive to the whole idea and I didn’t think there was much room for doubt. She feels pretty comfortable and I feel comfortable knowing she has the answers that she needed. I also armed her with the Kotex site for Tweens for her to hear stories from other girls as well as more information and a Q&A that maybe she just needed to hear.
In addition to that, we made her a little back to school package containing a few girly things like chapstick, a hair brush, hair ties and some panty liners and pads for her. The packaging on the tween brand is so very neat. It’s bright and bold and says “I’m not embarrassed about this life change that every woman has.” I love it. Arming her with products she can use in the event this happens when she is away from home, at school or wherever that may be, was important. Having the talk the was comfortable. She was very receptive and I think most moms (and dads) will be surprised with how receptive to the discussion that your tween will be. I say the talk should be sooner rather then later. Have multiple talks. Ease into the discussion and don’t let it feel uncomfortable.
I feel that your child will feed off your energy, so if you need to gather thoughts before the talk, then do that. Your child can sense your uncomfortable feeling and will likely be the same. I’ve have MULTIPLE talks with my daughter. I broke the large discussion into smaller pieces and talked about them a piece at a time. How are you preparing your tween?
