As a child I had a HUGE passion for catching fireflies. They were every where we went and my family had a cottage on the water where we would head out and catch them all the time. It was always something we looked forward too. We kept them in jars and then got upset the next morning when they didn’t “light up”. It’s a fond memory I have from my childhood. Now I despise all {real} bugs, but that’s beside the point, right?!

A few weeks ago we went for a visit with some friends to their cottage. We caught a firefly and that was the FIRST time my kiddos had seen one. They were so amused. Sadly, because of the night time I didn’t have the ability to catch it on the camera. We didn’t keep the critters because ~~mom would never have been able to sleep~~ it’s not natural to coup them up in a jar and expect them to live. When we got home I was telling my friend Candy about our firefly experience and I was excited to no end. She didn’t get it. She can see them any night she’d like. We live in the city and they are just NOT around here anymore. She’s in the country. A benefit I guess you could say.

A few days later Gemmy sent me a jarred My Pet Firefly! I can’t even explain how precious this little guy is. He’s available in 3 neat colors!! We’ve named him Buddy.

Isn’t he adorable?!! My Pet Firefly is completely ~~fake and won’t hurt mom~~ harmless. It’s mechanical, which is nice. It’s not real so you don’t have to feel bad about hurting an insect or feeling creeped out that it will unscrew the lid and jump out in the middle of the night. There is an on/off switch in case you want your little friend to stop flittering and take a nap. When your firefly is turned on it will flitter around and light up. You can interact with it by tapping the jar. The more taps the more flittering and flying. My kiddos have been playing with this little critter non-stop. We love our new pet and I love that the kids are getting to enjoy something that I loved as a child!

With the same concept as the firefly, you can house a pet butterfly in your home. I never caught butterflies as a child, but this certainly didn’t stop me from enjoying the butterfly.
